12 weeks - One More Week till the 2nd Trimester!!

Only one more week to go, and I will be out of that "dreaded" 1st trimester! YAY!

This week the baby is about the size of a plum...






Here's a look at what is happening this week...

• The fetus is now about 2.5 inches (6cm) length and weighs about 0.7 ounce (20 g).


• The feet are almost half an inch (1cm) long.
  
• The fetus starts moving spontaneously.
  
• The face is beginning to look like a baby's face.
  
• The pancreas is functioning and producing insulin.
  
• Fingernails and toenails appear.
  
• The baby can suck his thumb, and get hiccups

The most dramatic development this week: reflexes. Your baby's fingers will soon begin to open and close, his toes will curl, his eye muscles will clench, and his mouth will make sucking movements. In fact, if you prod your abdomen, your baby will squirm in response, although you won't be able to feel it. His kidneys will begin excreting urine into his bladder.

Meanwhile, nerve cells are multiplying rapidly, and in your baby's brain, synapses are forming furiously. His face looks unquestionably human: His eyes have moved from the sides to the front of his head, and his ears are right where they should be.

Your baby now has a chin and a nose and a facial profile. Vocal chords are complete, and the baby can and does sometimes cry silently. The brain is fully formed, and the baby can also feel pain. The fetus may even suck his thumb. The eyelids now cover the eyes, and will remain shut until the seventh month to protect the delicate optical nerve fibers. The hair is on the head and the fingers and toes have developed soft nails.

Baby's size has almost doubled in the last 3 weeks!!

Here's me at 12 weeks...I'm definitely getting a baby bump/pouch and my clothes are very snug if not uncomfortable around my waist! :-)
